Rishtey (2002) is an emotional action-drama directed by Indra Kumar, featuring powerhouse performances by Anil Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, and Amrish Puri. Loosely inspired by Sylvester Stallone’s Over the Top (1987), the film blends love, betrayal, family conflict, and father–son bonding in a gripping cinematic journey. Plot Summary
Suraj Singh (Anil Kapoor), a hardworking, lower-middle-class street fighter, falls deeply in love with the wealthy and kind-hearted Komal (Karisma Kapoor). Despite her father Yashpal Chaudhary’s (Amrish Puri) disapproval, they get married and soon expect a child.
But happiness doesn’t last long.
Komal walks into a trap set by her manipulative father: a woman falsely claims to be Suraj’s mistress. Heartbroken, Komal goes into premature labor and gives birth to a baby boy, Karan. Yashpal plots to eliminate the newborn to sever Komal’s bond with Suraj. Suraj fights off the attackers and escapes with his son, but Yashpal deceives Komal into believing Suraj kidnapped the child.
Suraj raises Karan alone, doing multiple odd jobs and building a beautiful father-son bond. Meanwhile, the lively fisherwoman Vaijanti (Shilpa Shetty) falls in love with Suraj, though he can’t move beyond Komal.
Years later, Yashpal discovers Suraj’s whereabouts, igniting a legal war for Karan’s custody. Komal, emotionally broken and manipulated by her father, wins custody, forcing Karan away from Suraj.
In a dramatic twist, Vaijanti finds the woman who framed Suraj—now sick and repentant—and the truth finally reaches Komal. Realizing the deception, she rushes to find Suraj competing in a brutal wrestling championship. Beaten and bleeding, Suraj rises again when he sees Komal, wins the match, earns the prize money, and proves his love and strength.
Yashpal finally repents, accepting defeat and reuniting the family he once tore apart.
