Welcome to Quest's End! The war ended four months ago. Garrett's body hasn't figured that out yet.
THE WARRIOR WHO FORGOT HOW TO STOP
Day 47
Same corner. Same armor. Same sword.
Mira's been running this tavern for sixteen years, seen plenty of soldiers come through after campaigns. They usually take a week, maybe two, then the armor comes off and they start laughing again, start being people again.
Garrett's been here forty-seven days.
The Extra Bowls
He orders four bowls of stew every night. Eats maybe one and a half. Mira stopped charging him for the extras around week three, didn't seem right somehow.
Asked him about it once, gently, why he keeps ordering food he doesn't eat. Garrett looked at her like she'd asked why he breathes.
Supply lines, he said. Just that. Supply lines.
She got it then. There are no supply lines anymore, but his body doesn't know that, keeps preparing for sieges that aren't coming.
What Marcus Notices
Young ranger kid, Marcus, comes in most evenings now. Sits two tables over from Garrett, never right next to him, some unspoken combat spacing thing probably.
They barely talk. Last week Marcus dropped a tray, loud crash, both of them were standing before it hit the ground, hands on weapons that thankfully stayed sheathed.
Marcus sat back down first. Laughed, kind of. Not a real laugh.
Doors too, he said to Garrett. Can't handle doors slamming.
Garrett nodded. Mira watched them sit there in silence for another hour, two soldiers who understood each other perfectly without saying much of anything.
Midnight
This is when Mira sees it, when the last patrons leave and she's wiping down tables, pretending not to watch.
Garrett's hands start shaking. He grips the table edge, knuckles white, waits for it to pass. Takes about five minutes usually.
Forty-three battles, she heard him tell Marcus once. Six years. Hands never shook during any of it.
Now in her peaceful tavern they won't stay still.
The Letter
Found it on his table one morning, crumpled up next to three other crumpled attempts. Wasn't trying to snoop but couldn't help seeing the opening line:
Dear Thomas, I survived but
That's where it stopped. All four versions stopped somewhere around there, different words, same inability to finish.
She smoothed them out, left them on his table. He never mentioned it. Neither did she.
The Perimeter Check
Garrett does this every night, thinks Mira doesn't notice. She does.
After she locks up and heads upstairs to her own room, he stays another hour, then walks the entire perimeter of the building. Outside, inside, checking windows, doors, weak points that don't exist because this isn't a fortress, it's just a tavern.
She asked him about it once. Big mistake.
His face did something complicated, couldn't explain why he does it, just said that skipping it makes his chest tight. Said it like he was confessing something shameful.
Building's safe, Mira told him. You made it safe. You and Marcus and every other soldier who fought so we could just run taverns and complain about weather.
Garrett nodded. Kept doing his perimeter checks anyway.
Tomorrow, Maybe
Overheard him talking to Marcus yesterday, rare long conversation between them.
Gonna try taking the armor off tomorrow, Garrett said. Maybe just the gauntlets.
Marcus asked if he was ready.
Garrett shrugged. Probably not. But it's been four months, figure I should try.
Or you could wait, Marcus said. Not like there's a schedule for this.
They sat with that for a while.
Mira's serving them both now, fresh stew, extra bowls nobody's charging for. Garrett's hands are steadier today, not much, but some.
Tomorrow maybe the gauntlets come off. Or next week. Or next month.
Nobody's rushing him. That's what this place is for, warriors who forgot how to stop, learning that stopping is okay, that processing takes however long it takes.
Tonight the armor stays on.
