Facing the extremely narrow Cave 127, she squeezed through by force, leaving over 60 bruises and scars on her body. In the male-dominated field of international caving, Liu Jia, a woman from Chongqing, earned trust through action as the only Chinese and female participant. She wasn’t content with simple exploration—she pursued first descents and precise mapping, setting a record by being the first to explore the 841-meter-deep Wanzhang Pit.
Chongqing, a mountainous city dotted with WWII-era air-raid shelters hidden in its urban fabric and lush landscapes, was Liu Jia’s introduction to caving. As a horror movie enthusiast, she feels an unusual closeness to "darkness" and the "unknown." On her first official caving trip, she got lost for 10 hours. While her teammates panicked, she felt inexplicably excited.
Over 21 years, Liu Jia has completed thousands of cave explorations, yet she says she’s still at the starting point. That initial craving to explore the underground world remains unchanged. Battered but passionate, she continues to map the unknown subterranean China.
