A classic for any style of acrobatics, from the Russian Yakovlev factory, the Yak 54 is one of the most instantly recognisable outlines in the sky at any club.

Its round fuselage provides some of the nicest roll manoeuvres imaginable and with our kit the same can be expected. Designed for slightly more classic 3D, it can still perform all the manoeuvres yet not make the pilot a nervous wreck each time they try something new. A carefully designed wing section and moderate control surfaces by todays standards make everything happen just that little bit slower, ideal for early 3D steps or if you just love low and slow just inches off the deck!

✈ The UK’s Longest Running Radio Control Model Show!

Three enthusiastic modelers worked together to stage what was (and still is) one of the largest model shows of its kind in the country. Working together with the airfield staff and model trade they produced a huge show displaying all types of radio-controlled models. Staged on the airfield and inside one of the hangars, this proved a huge success. However, after three years they had ‘had enough’!

That is where we stepped in! With a huge amount of experience in the Model Trade along with putting on similar Shows our team was ready for the challenge and took the show over in 1989. After a few years, the show had to move to its current site on the airfield due to the enormous Saturday market which dominates the intersection of the airfield on the Saturday. This was financially necessary for the airfield if it was to continue operating, so Wings & Wheels was moved to the North End of the site.

Over the years, this has developed into a truly Spectacular event and has featured some of the largest and most spectacular Radio Control Model Aircraft in the world as part of its flying program. World Class Pilots, Models & Diplays!
We’re fortunate at North Weald Airfeild to have use of the concrete runway for our flying displays as well as a grass runway! North Weald Airfield is a genuine WW1 airfield with many of its original buildings intact and the home of some very iconic aircraft!
It’s hard to believe that one hundred years ago an airfield that was used by the Royal Flying Corps in 1916 provides the same venue for what is the longest running model show in the UK Those young WW1 pilots could never have imagined the changes that would take place in the world of aviation, let alone the fact that one day it would be possible to fly a model aeroplane at speeds they could only dream of and all controlled by a man on the ground holding a radio control transmitter! Such is progress! And that progress is more than represented in the range of models on display, every era and type of model aircraft will be flown throughout the weekend from WW1 biplanes to the very latest fast jets.
All of the aircraft flying are specialist craft of all types, WW1 canvas and string, WW2 warbirds such as Spitfire and Hurricane, civilian craft through the ages all powered by engines which are bigger than most motorcycle engines on our roads.
Other teams will be flying complicated aerobatic schedules in wonderful synchronous manoeuvres leaving shapes in smoke in the sky.
