This is an interesting song to me for two reasons: the verbiage used is relatively advanced for a preschooler and elementary schooler song, and the themes of utilitarianism and sacrifice promoted in the lyrics give insight into Imperial Japanese culture, values and education in the 1930s and 40s. I cannot think of any modern nursery rhyme, Japanese or otherwise, that has themes similar to those presented in this song.
I am not a Japanese speaker so the translation may not be 100% accurate. If you find any mistakes, let me know in the comments and I will fix them.
