A Bit of Everything (incl. MX A220, B6 A321neo, DL LHR Restart) | SLC Planespotting May ’22 Pt. 2

Some afternoon and evening spotting at all three parallel runways. Starting off on the east side, I was surprised to see a brand-new Breeze Airways A220 getting ready to depart on an unscheduled flight to Tampa. Breeze does not currently fly to SLC, but the airline does have a connection to the local area, because their headquarters are located in Cottonwood Heights, a suburb of Salt Lake City about 20 miles southeast of the airport.

The Breeze A220 was followed by a Delta A330neo heading out to Paris, which had to taxi across the runway and enter from the east side due to some construction on the west side taxiways that limits the allowable wingspan.

After that, I walked over to Runway 35 to watch a few landings. I had originally hoped to see an American A321neo that was coming in from Phoenix, but sadly I didn’t make it in time. Much to my surprise, though, I did get to see another A321neo, this one a JetBlue plane that had diverted while flying from Burbank to New York-JFK.

Once things quieted down a bit, I walked over to Runway 34L. I mostly watched takeoffs on this side (including the American A321neo I wanted to see earlier), but stayed to watch two landings in particular. First, I saw a Delta A330-200 coming in from London Heathrow; that was the first time this flight had operated since March 2020, when it was canceled due to the pandemic. I also watched a KLM 787-9 landing from Amsterdam—this was my first time filming it up close since the flight restarted this year, after a two-year hiatus (also due to the pandemic).

One random fact about the London flight that I noticed: the flight numbers have switched back to DL50/51, which were the ones originally used when the route first launched in 2016 on the 767-300ER. The flights were dropped after Summer 2018, but in late 2019 they started up again using new flight numbers (DL18/19) and a new equipment type (A330-200). When Delta resumed the route a third time this summer, they kept the A330 but changed the flight numbers back to DL50/51.
