A well-known legend describes how the bodies of gibbeted criminals were packed in barrels and rolled off Gibbet Hill into Deadman's Pond below.
In the 1800s military officials called it "Parson's Pond". The name "Deadman's Pond" came into general use following a tragedy on Boxing Day, 1869: two children fell through the ice while skating. They perished, and so did Frederick Weston Carter (1846-1869), a young lawyer and officer in the local Volunteers, who tried to save them. The people of St.John's honoured Carter with a monument on the grounds of Government House.
