Águilas Abandonado - Torre de Cope

Su origen data de 1539 cuando Carlos I mandó construir una torre en Cope. Se tiene constancia de que las obras se terminaron el 3 de julio de 1576 cuando fue entregada por el Regidor de Lorca, Alonso García de Guevara al vecino de Lorca, Hernando de Burgos, como Alcalde de la misma.

La torre sufrió diferentes asedios lo que provocó que quedara ésta maltrecha y abandonada. El primero de estos asedios tuvo lugar dos años después de su entrega. Cuatro años más tarde en 1578, la torre cayó en manos de turcos, volviendo al año siguiente a ser reconstruida. Tras una serie de nuevas destrucciones y reformas, en el año 1702 se inicia una nueva reparación que hará posible que la torre albergue una mayor guarnición. En 1756 la torre volvió a modificar su estructura. La última de estas remodelaciones de las que tenemos conocimiento ocurrió en 1801.

En el siglo XIX con la desaparición de la piratería la torre fue perdiendo su misión, procediendo así a su posterior abandono y desmantelación.

Actualmente, esta torre ha sido restaurada siguiendo las remodelaciones del siglo XVIII, convirtiéndose en un ejemplo de edificación defensiva de la costa murciana.

Today, this tower has been restored following the remodeling of the eighteenth century, becoming an example of defensive building on the coast of Murcia.
