Subclavius Muscle – Anatomy Made Simple | Origin, Insertion, Nerve Supply & Clinical Notes
Topics covered
o Exact origin & insertion
o Nerve supply (Nerve to Subclavius)
o Actions made simple
o How it protects the subclavian vessels
o Clinical correlations: fractures of clavicle, subclavian vein access, thoracic outlet relevance
o Memory tricks to recall easily
🔑 Key Concepts &exam points
• Smallest muscle of the pectoral region.
• Origin:
From 1st rib at its costochondral junction.
• Insertion:
Subclavian groove on inferior surface of middle third of clavicle.
• Nerve Supply:
Nerve to Subclavius (C5–C6) from upper trunk of brachial plexus.
• Action:
Depresses the clavicle.
Stabilizes sternoclavicular (SC) joint.
Protects subclavian vessels & brachial plexus from clavicle movements.
• Unique point:
Sometimes gives an accessory branch to phrenic nerve → “Accessory phrenic nerve”.
• Clinical correlation:
Important in clavicle fractures, preventing upward displacement of bone.
Landmark during subclavian vein catheterization.
Relevant in thoracic outlet syndrome anatomy.
• Relations:
Located between clavicle and first rib, lying just above subclavian vessels.
• Variation:
May be absent in some individuals (exam trivia).
• Functionally:
Acts as a protective cushion for underlying vessels & nerves.
• Mnemonic
