María Teresa Gertrudis de Jesús Carreño García (Teresa Carreño) wrote this heartfelt waltz for her daughter, Teresita.
Teresa Carreño was a 19th century Venezuelan soprano, pianist, conductor, and composer. Carreño had a truly exceptional life in music, from her early days taking voice lessons with Gioachino Rossini, to her many performing accomplishments including concerts on nearly every continent, at Carnegie Hall, with conductors Gustav Mahler and Edvard Grieg, and twice at the White House, including once for Abraham Lincoln. Today, the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra performs in the Teresa Carreño Cultural Complex, she's the subject of the documentary Teresita y el Piano, and even part of the planet Venus is named for her!
