Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6V300F0 HDD Sounds #46

If Lucifer were a hard drive manufacturer, Maxtor would fit the bill.

Various poor management decisions alongside not-so-reliable drives during the 2000s led to Maxtor's downfall and eventual merger with Seagate. Initial SATA DiamondMax models had issues like random motor seizures or the iconic Maxtor click of death, while these later ones were a fair bit better but still couldn't compete well...probably because Maxtor had already made so many mad at their faulty products.

The Sabres weren't nearly as bad as the Calypsos at least (and I'd probably throw some puns around at the name "Calypso" because of how unreliable that platform was), but they weren't enough to get people to change their mind. Seagate were top dog at the time, with Hitachi and WD not far behind, while Maxtor lagged further behind, arguably even more so than Samsung. It also didn't help that Maxtor already didn't have a great reputation coming into the millennium; they faced QC issues with some late '90s DiamondMax drives (and some earlier models as well) and really couldn't come back from that low. Compare that to IBM who, before releasing the Deathstar 75GXP, had some issues with certain platters before scrapping them and releasing other robust Deskstars like the 22GXP and 34GXP. Unlike Maxtor, IBM were at least able to fully rebound...again, before the 75GXP.

Maxtor is long gone now, but their legacy lingers in Seagate products. Seagate's 2.5 inch near-line products are derivative of Maxtor's near-line engineering team, while the Barracudas took the brunt of their wrath and ended up becoming noticeably worse from 7200.11 onward.
