The M-1978 Koksan is a North Korean self-propelled artillery piece developed in the late 1970s. Its long barrel design allows for increased accuracy and a range of up to 30 kilometres and is mounted on a tracked chassis for mobility.
Much about the M-1978 Koksan remains unclear owing to North Korean isolationism. Specifics regarding its capabilities, production numbers, and combat effectiveness are mostly unknown. This ambiguity complicates efforts to assess the Koksan's engineering history.
It is generally believed that the earliest iteration of this vehicle (the M1978, featured) is comprised of a cannon derived from the German 17cm Kanone 18 artillery - many of which were captured by the Soviets after WWII and chassis derived from a T-55.
