Durga Puja Nabami (Maha Nabami) is the ninth day of Durga Puja, following Maha Ashtami. It is one of the most significant days of the festival, marked with rituals, devotion, and celebration.
Here’s an overview of Nabami rituals and significance:
Religious Significance
Maha Nabami is believed to be the day when Ma Durga destroyed Mahishasura, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
Devotees worship Durga as Mahishasuramardini, the goddess in her most powerful form.
It is considered the last day of Durga Puja rituals, as Vijaya Dashami (the next day) is for farewell and immersion.
Nabami Puja Rituals
1. Maha Arati – Grand arati (ritual with lamps) is performed in pandals and homes with dhak beats, conch shells, and uludhwani.

3. Pushpanjali – Devotees offer flowers to Maa Durga while chanting mantras.
4. Bhog distribution – Nabami bhog usually includes khichuri, labra (mixed veg), chutney, papad, payesh, and sweets, which are shared among devotees.
Cultural & Social Celebrations
On Nabami, pandals are usually most crowded as people wear their best traditional attire.
Evening is marked with Dhunuchi Naach (dancem with incense burners) and cultural programs.
Food stalls and community feasts remain very popular.
Transition to Vijaya Dashami
After Nabami’s rituals, the preparations begin for Dashami (Bijoya), when Maa Durga is bid farewell with sindoor khela (
