Part 1 in a series of films of a cruise on the 45’ centerboard schooner “Defiance” to Scandinavia in 1962. Designed for owner Rose Dolan in 1959 by Aage Nielsen (who drew the hull lines) and Murray Peterson, “Defiance” was built at the Paul Luke boatyard in East Boothbay, Maine, and launched in 1961.
This reel shows brief footage of her construction, her provisioning at Padanaram, MA, and her departure from Newport, RI, with the majority of the film being life onboard during the first part of the 21 day crossing.
Her crew for this voyage to Norway, where they would be met by the owner, was Norris and Kitty Hoyt, Dr. Richard Warren, Bruce Burgess, Kari Vitikainen, Bruce Lancaster and Dick Ely. More information can be found in Norris Hoyt’s 1987 book, “Addicted to Sail”.
We will be posting the other reels from this series as they are digitized over the coming months.
