Hatsune Miku in Arabic: "Mashi" by Mm2x2

Trigger Warning: The song is somewhat suicidal.

Here goes my second Hatsune Miku song in Arabic! This one was inspired by a poem I wrote recently. The original poem tells the story of someone grappling with immense societal pressure and doubt from those around them. This individual ultimately decides to continue living despite their persistent suicidal thoughts, aiming to prove all their doubters wrong. However, once they achieve their goal, they come to the painful realization that they haven't truly lived for themselves at all. The poem ends with an implied suicide, despite everything they have gone through.

The song lyrics are much shorter than the poem, and it is missing a lot of the story telling. However, the song lyrics include a lot of wordplay! This song plays on the word “ماشي” (pronounced "ma-she"), which carries different meanings across Arabic dialects. In the Yemeni dialect, "ماشي" typically means “no” and can be used as “no way,” derived from the phrase "ما شيء" (ma shay), meaning “nothing.” In the Egyptian dialect, however, “ماشي” means “okay” or “fine,” coming from the root word "مشى" (masha), which means “to walk.” Additionally, “ماشي” itself can mean “walking” or "continuing" in both formal and colloquial Arabic. In everyday conversation, one might also use the phrase “ماشي الحال” (mashe al-hal), roughly translating to “it’s okay” or “things are fine,” often shortened to just “ماشي” as a casual response to “How are you?” that's frequently interpreted as "barley getting by". You will notice that in a lot of spots in the song, two or more meanings can apply.
