A lot of people point to the thief on the cross and say, “See—deathbed salvation proves baptism isn’t necessary.” But is that a faithful way to handle the text, and does it actually apply after Jesus’ resurrection and His command to preach, make disciples, and baptize?
In this teaching, I break down why the thief on the cross is not a universal “deathbed salvation template” you can automatically apply to people living post-cross under the Great Commission. We’ll look at what covenant moment the thief was in, what Jesus had and had not yet instituted publicly, and why the apostles consistently preached repentance, faith, and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ in the era of the New Covenant.
If you’ve ever heard:
“The thief wasn’t baptized, so baptism doesn’t matter,”
“All you need is a last-second confession,”
“Baptism is just symbolic, not commanded,”
This lesson will help you separate what happened on Calvary from what Jesus commanded after His resurrection—and it will challenge you to take Jesus’ words and the apostles’ pattern seriously.
Scriptures we’ll reference include:
Luke 23:39–43, Matthew 28:18–20, Mark 16:15–16, Acts 2:38, Acts 8, Acts 10, Acts 19, Romans 6:3–4, Galatians 3:27, 1 Peter 3:21.
