Plutonium is generally considered an undesirable waste from today's reactors, but waiting hundreds of thousands of years for it to decay away isn't the right plan. Mixed-oxide fuel that combines plutonium and thorium can be used to generate power, to destroy plutonium, and to make "superfuel" (uranium-233) that will be used to start future liquid-fluoride reactors that will avoid making plutonium at all. It's a strategy worth seriously considering.
