Until the end of 2024, YouTube accepted uploads with two tracks in the best PCM quality. This made it possible to provide you with both the original 5.1 surround sound recording and the original stereo downmix in one video.

Since the beginning of 2025, YouTube has only accepted one track in stereo or 5.1 surround sound in a video upload. YouTube automatically creates the downmix with the parameters 0 dB for the front channels, -3 dB for the center channel, and -6 dB for the rear channels. This is an extremely poor process, so I decided to offer you this video twice: once with the original 5.1 surround sound and once with the original stereo downmix.

terms of quality

Until the end of 2024, it was possible to upload both tracks (stereo / 5.1) in the best PCM quality. Regardless of the source material, YouTube encoded the stereo track with OPUS at 128 kbps and 5.1 surround with EC3 at 256 kbps.

The process for stereo has remained the same.

For 5.1 surround sound, since the beginning of 2025, YouTube has only accepted uploads in ACC at 512 kbps, which is extremely lossy compared to PCM at 48 kHz/16 bits, and then encodes this signal with EC3 at 256 kbps.

This means the audio material is encoded twice
