Protecting Warehouses even with no tenants or leased is a more important investment. Protect Vendor or intruders access to the building with monitoring the site via Security Cameras and Access Control. This site in South Philadelphia features Verkada equipment to protect the warehouse.
The height of the ceilings were about 50 ft and special lifts and boom lifts were needed to install the wiring.
Building a new warehouse is a major investment. But if it's located in a neighborhood known for high crime rates—whether it's theft, vandalism, trespassing, or illegal dumping—then you’re facing challenges beyond just construction logistics and operations. In these environments, security is not optional—it’s essential.
In this video (and this companion post), we’re going deep on how to secure your new construction warehouse from day one, so you can protect your property, your people, and your long-term investment.
1. UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS
Before you can secure your warehouse, you need to understand what you're protecting against. In high-crime areas, common threats include:
Break-ins and burglary targeting tools, equipment, copper, or inventory.
Vandalism (graffiti, broken windows, fire damage).
Trespassing—people using your site as shelter or a dumping ground.
Vehicle theft or catalytic converter removal.
Illegal dumping of trash, construction debris, or hazardous waste.
Cyber threats if systems aren't protected (especially in modern smart warehouses).
Each of these risks must be addressed with layered security solutions—think of it as building a fortress with multiple walls of protection.
2. DESIGNING WITH SECURITY IN MIND
If you're still in the design or early construction phase, you have a huge advantage. You can integrate security into the architectural plan, rather than bolting it on later.
Security-by-Design Strategies:
Limited points of entry: Avoid too many doors or access points.
Clear sight lines for surveillance.
Fencing and lighting integrated into landscaping.
Reinforced walls or loading bay shielding.
Setbacks and vehicle barriers for crash protection.
Collaborate with your architect and a security consultant early to align your layout with safety goals.
3. PHYSICAL PERIMETER SECURITY
The first and most important layer of protection is your perimeter.
Fencing:
Use 8-foot+ steel or concrete fencing with anti-climb measures (barbed wire, anti-scale mesh).
Consider palisade or welded wire fencing for high security with visibility.
Add vehicle bollards or reinforced planters at key entry points.
Gates:
Install automated gates with keypad or RFID access.
Use magnetic locks and tamper alarms on vehicle gates.
Landscaping:
Keep shrubs trimmed low and use defensive planting (thorny bushes) under windows and fences.
4. DOOR AND ENTRY POINT REINFORCEMENT
Doors are a prime target for break-ins. A secure warehouse must treat every door as a vulnerability.
Tips:
Use steel-reinforced doors with anti-pry hinges.
Upgrade to multi-point locking systems.
Install door contacts for your alarm system.
Add steel mesh security gates on loading dock doors.
Even temporary doors used during construction should be high-grade or backed with removable steel plates.
