The history of the Great Wall of China began when fortifications built by various states during the Spring and Autumn (771–476 BC) and Warring States periods (475–221 BC) were connected by the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, to protect his newly founded Qin dynasty (221–206 BC) against incursions by nomads

We do not know the exact number, but as a rough comparison there are 10 million bricks in the Empire State Building, which is about a quarter of a mile tall. The Great Wall of China is 13,000 miles long, so if there are about the same number of bricks per feet, we can estimate that there are 500 billion bricks.

The bricks of the Great Wall of China are held together by sticky rice mortar. Around 500 CE, sticky rice soup was mixed with slaked lime to make an inorganic−organic composite mortar that had more strength and water resistance than lime mortar.
