이 곡은 베토벤이 세상을 떠난 지 40년이나 지난 1867년까지 출판되지 않았다. 그 후 독일의 음악학자 루트비히 놀은 음악 원본을 발견하여 베토벤이 1810년 4월 27일에 곡을 작곡하였음을 알게 되었고 이를 출판하게 된다. 현재는 베토벤의 자필 악보를 찾을 수 없다.
우리가 흔히 듣는 "엘리제를 위하여"는 루트비히 놀이 편곡한 초기 버전으로, 후에 여러 작곡가가 편곡한 버전들이 출판되었다.
