The Italian pianist and composer Giovanni Sgambati (1841-1914), a pupil of Liszt, created one of the most enduring piano transcriptions, by expanding on Christoph Willibald Gluck's (1714-1787) "Mélodie", a Dance of the Blessed Spirits, from his opera Orfeo et Euridice (1762). "Mélodie" in Gluck's original version is for solo flute and accompanying strings, and conveys to the listener a scene of ethereal beauty set in the Elysian Fields.
In Sgambati's version, the long-breathed flute line becomes a cantabile piano voice, while the accompanying strings are transformed into a luminous texture of harmonies. The transcription preserves Gluck’s simplicity and spiritual depth, while enriching it with a romantic glow.
Nareh performed this piece as part of her recital to remember and honor the victims of the senseless shooting tragedy in Graz, which on June 10, 2025 took the lives of many children.
Live recording, June 18, 2025, Vienna, Haus der Ingenieure.
