This team consists of characters coming from the Art of Fighting series. In the first two games of the series, this team consisted of Ryo Sakazaki, Robert Garcia and Takuma Sakazaki, the three main protagonists of the classic series and the main practitioners of the Kyokugenryu Karate Style.
Starting with The King of Fighters '96, the team would begin shaking up their dynamic, with Yuri Sakazaki (Ryo's younger sister) and King (a French bartender from South Town and Ryo's love interest) joining with the team in some moments. Continung with The King of Fighters 2000, King's inclusion to the team roster in few tournament entries abandons the name of "Kyokugenryu Team" to simply called the "Art of Fighting Team", due to her not being a Kyokugenryu fighter (her fighting style is Muay Thai). Starting from The King of Fighters XIV, Takuma leaves officially the team, and retires from the fighting scene to open a BBQ restaurant.
