Death Valley Junction, California has a history that includes:
Founding
In 1907, the town was established when the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad was built through the Amargosa Valley. The town was originally called Amargosa, but was renamed Death Valley Junction.
Borax mining
The town became a company town for the Pacific Coast Borax Company, which mined borax from the ancient lake bed in the valley. The borax was transported to the town by 20-mule wagons, then loaded onto trains and shipped out.
Decline
The town began to decline in the mid-20th century after the borax ran out in 1928.
Restoration
In 1967, New York dancer and actress Marta Becket discovered the abandoned theater building while stranded in town with a flat tire. She became enamored with the theater and, with help from benefactors, leased and purchased the hotel and theater complex.
Historic district
The Death Valley Junction Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes 26 structures built by the Pacific Coast Borax Company, including the Amargosa Opera House and Hotel.
