Women in Australia are dying from asthma at twice the rate of men — and many of these deaths are occurring in older women.
Hormonal changes during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause can make asthma harder to control. But older women are also more likely to live alone and may face cost barriers and difficulty accessing care. They may also live in housing affected by damp and mould, which can increase asthma risk.
This morning, our CEO Kate Miranda spoke with ABC News Breakfast about why these deaths are preventable and what needs to change.
We’re calling for:
✅ Improved medicine adherence support and reduced cost barriers.
✅ Research and national guidelines that reflect women’s real-world experiences
✅ Tailored treatment that recognises hormonal influences across a woman’s life.
✅ Better access to specialist care, particularly for older women.
✅ Housing and environmental improvements for those in public or community housing.
No one should die from asthma.
We urge women and all people with asthma to book in with their doctor, and call an Asthma Educator for free on 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462) to help people stay on top of their asthma.
