Jaunpur Fort, also known as Shahi Qila or Royal Fort , is a famous fort built in Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, in the 14th century. It lies near the Shahi Bridge upon the River Gomti. The fort is a major tourist destination today and is roughly 2.2 kms away from Jaunpur city. The Fort lies 60 kilometers away from Varanasi ,the Bhandari railway junction is only 3 kilometers away from it. Lucknow lies 215 kilometers away from the Jaunpur Fort.
The Shahi Fort Jaunpur was built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq’s chieftain, Ibrahim Naib Barbak. The fort has been destroyed numerous times by several rulers including the British and also the Lodhi Kings. It was renovated comprehensively during the Mughal period Humayu and Akbir Great.
The Jaunpur Fort lies on the Gomti’s left bank and some historians state that Firoz Shah Tughlaq himself built it sometime in 1362 AD. The inner gate goes up to 26.5 ft in terms of its height while being 16.5 ft wide, as well. The central gate goes up to 36 ft in height. There is a massive dome on top while the current remnants include just the eastern gate and a few arches. Muneer Khan arranged for an imposing front gate to be constructed for greater security. This was embellished with yellow and blue stones. There is a bath inside the premises in the Turkish design style along with 7na mosque, as well. The latter was developed by Ibrahim Shah Sharki when he was a prince.
