Diesel Trains of the Long Island Rail Road | Summer 2025

There’s no better place to be than Long Island, New York, in the summertime, and tying it all together is the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)— one of the oldest and busiest commuter railroads in the United States, carrying more than 83 million riders in 2024.

One of the most unique aspects of the LIRR is its diesel fleet. For passenger service, the railroad operates two distinct locomotive models, the DE30AC and the DM30AC, with the LIRR’s C-3 multilevel passenger coaches complementing these locomotives. The LIRR is the only railroad in the whole country to use these locomotive and passenger coach models.

Railfanning on Long Island is especially exciting during the summer months. So now, let’s take a closer look at some of the trains we spotted along our journey from New York City all the way out to the town of East Hampton.
