Mahatma Jyotiba Phule (1827-1890) was a great Indian social reformer. He fought throughout his life against caste system, untouchability, and oppression of women. Along with his wife Savitribai Phule, he opened India's first girls' school in 1848 and started education for Dalits and the oppressed. He founded the “Satyashodhak Samaj” and wrote books like “Gulamgiri”. He is a symbol of education, equality, and upliftment of women and Dalits.
