This is the 5th part of our Spiti valley road trip. In this episode, we explore Dhankar Monastery, trek to Dhankar Lake and finally travel from Dhankar to Mud Village in Pin Valley.

Dhankar
Dhankar is located at a height of 12700 feet between Tabo and Kaza in the cold desert of Spiti Valley.
"Dhang" literally means cliff and "kar" means fort. The monastery and the fort perched precariously on a cliff top are the most imposing as well as fascinating structures in the village. Dhankar fort has been declared among the 100 most endangered sites in the world. Dhankar was the old capital of Spiti Kingdom. Hence the fort. Later the capital was shifted to Kaza.

Dhankar Lake is about 3 km from the monastery. While the trek can be a bit strenuous for beginners, the views are awesome and compensates for all the trouble. We started for Dhankar Lake and trekked for about 1.30 hours to reach the lake.

After Dhankar, we left towards Pin Valley. We were staying at Mud village for the night.
