Every asana has a key alignment and an aim. Here, the alignment of this pose is to have the hips squared and at the same level (good luck with that). Aso, the torso must be over the front leg.
The aim of this pose is to have the hand flat on the floor (in ashtanga yoga it is outside of the foot, but it can also be inside of the foot), the back foot flat on the floor and to deepen the twist. This is a very challenging asana, so start with modifications.
