An overview of the Japanese Maple: Acer Palmatum Dissectum Tamukeyama. The Acer Palmatum Dissectum Tamukeyama is a truely remarkable specimen and it is going to be a proud center piece on our stand at Chelsea Flower Show 2019, it enjoys full sun but preferably in part shade, facing east or west, giving it morning or afternoon sun. It is very happy in a pot or container which can be displayed on your patio in the summer and easily moved to a more sheltered area in the winter. It is very top heavy with its wonderful canopy which makes fall over in the wind, it needs a wider pot or planting out The Video shows a close up of its characteristics, colours, leaves and bark. We will transition through the seasons to see the changes of this wonder Japanese Maple - All information at http://www.gardenseeker.garden/trees/...
Acer Palmatum Dissectum Tamukeyama is a weeping / cascading Japanese maple by nature. We have trained ours to stand up. From young, we connected bamboo canes to the 3 trunks with elastic bands, encouraging the trunks to grow upwards and not start to weep. At the 2 meter point we allowed it to weep, I think it has a couple of years to go to achieve the full desired effect, where the canopy branches should continue to grow downwards and really cascade. We has added a separator between the 3 trunks, this will widen the canopy and give it a larger span. Why, you may ask? We like to try things out, you have to be different if you are going to win another Gold Medal at Chelsea Flower Show, this is going in our 2019 stand, if it does not win this year, i am sure it will next.
We positioned it center stage at Chelsea Flower Show 2019 and it helped us to achieve our 5th Gold Medal.
The Tamukeyama is a dissectum with dense foliage, its deeply cut feathery leaves of 7 to 9 lobes which span 10cm. The leaves are a deep blood red colour in the spring with a slightly brighter red vein connected by a very fine red stem. The weeping branches are burgundy red are soft and springy by nature and surprisingly strong, they sway beautifully in a gentle breeze and remain intact in a storm.
In the autumn the leaves finally transform into a bright fire-glow red / orange colour, absolutely stunning.
The Tamukeyama, like the majority of Japanese Acers enjoys full sun and partial shade equally, be mindful when planting it out, it can grow to 3 meters high with a larger spread of 1 to 2 meters extra in relationship to its height. You can leave it in its pot or container for many years (it will grow slower) which is ideal for your patio or courtyard and it can be a center piece to any Japanese garden design.
