The peace agreement on Bosnia has encouraged hopes that
families divided by several years of war may soon be reunited.
Nena Savanovic, 12, and her brother Nedeljko, 8, mustered the
courage to approach the Bosnian Serb military command in Prijedor,
western Bosnia, to ask about the fate of their parents. They travelled unaccompanied to Prijedor to search for their parents. "Koransa" near Prijedor and "Rakovacke Bare" near Banja Luka are two of many collective refugee centres. They are overcrowded and poorly
furnished. Many provisional open-air camps with tents and people
on horsecarts still provide the only shelter for thousands of
homeless Bosnians. Vladimir Tsiourko, the UNHCR's chief of mission
in the region, told WTN: "There are some 150,000 refugees in
western Bosnia. The UNHCR is doing its best to help care for these
people and support other local aid organisations."
