UTEP played Utah in the semi-final game of the 1985 WAC Basketball Tournament in El Paso on March 6, 1985. UTEP won the game in Overtime 82-73.
UTEP finished 1st in the WAC regular season in 1985. UTEP had the #1 seed and had a bye into the semi-finals along with San Diego State who was the #2 seed. San Diego State won the 1985 WAC Tournament beating UTEP in the Championship game 87-81.
The crowd at UTEP basketball games during the 1980's were intense and intimidating. At the end of the game and when the Miners looked like they had the game in hand, the band would play the song AMEN from the movie "Lilies of the Field". You can listen to it in the Overtime video.
UTEP beat Tulsa and then lost to North Carolina State in the1985 NCAA Tournament.
For Utah, Manny Hendrix was the point guard. After college, he went on to play defensive back for the Dallas Cowboys.
