The family lore that comes across in the writing of the Little House books is present here. There is talk of a big woods, and some of the same expressive writing that takes you to the scene like it does in the other books. There’s a mention of getting a gift of poetry, which I think is referenced in one of the later books as a Christmas present.
Also they talk about the dad having to get a job for the railroad, and finding work to pay for things. Pa worked on the railroad in the On the Shores of Silver Lake book. Some other things I noticed was the wording was the same- Slough for marsh and there was the same tendency to put in whole lyrics to music in the book as was done in the other books. There’s the same talk of strikes from railroad workers who weren’t paid, dugouts and also that phrase that the government has enough money to buy everyone a farm. In this book, a cottonwood whose seeds are stored for replanting is a family story that if you ever go to De Smet, SD to their farm, there are still some cottonwoods, I think 6, that were planted by Pa by saving the seed of a cottonwood where they made camp one day.
