In his first symphony, Ikuma Dan attempted to integrate the basic elements of the traditional European four-movement symphony into a single movement, but in this second symphony - which is interrupted by the "Sinfonia Burlesca" - he chose a three-movement structure.
However, this does not mean that he retreated, and it can be said that he showed a freer conception while following the idea of the first symphony, and showed his orientation toward a flexible writing style. Of course, it cannot be denied that there is a considerable amount of European consciousness left in it, but it should not be overlooked that the middle movement is consistent with Andante con moto, while both end movements specify a great number of tempo changes.

The composition began in the summer of 1955 and was completed in Hayama on March 30 of the following year.
The first performance was given on April 5, 1956, at the 77th subscription concert of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Masashi Ueda. The present revised version was written on June 5, 1988, and the instrumentation is as follows:
Piccolo (replaced by Flute III), Flute 2, Oboe 2, English Horn, Clarinet 2, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon 2, Contrabassoon, Horn 6, Trumpet 3, Trombone 3, Tuba, Timpani, Triangle, Tambourine, Snare Drum, Cymbal, Bass Drum, Tam-tam, and Strings

The first movement consists of an introduction of Andante serioso and the main part starting with Allegro ma non tanto. This movement is a long one, occupying almost half of the total performance time. The motive (G-flat - C-flat - F-flat - B-flat / C-flat - B-flat - C-flat) presented at the beginning of the introduction is related to the first theme, but it plays an important role in the whole movement. The main part of this movement is considered to be sonata form with a powerful first theme presented in Allegro ma non tanto and a lyrical second theme in Moderato, but the contrast of these themes and the richness of materials derived from them make this movement rich and varied.

The second movement seems to be an application of the rondo form of Andante con moto, and shows an almost symmetric conception, although the thematic part after the second episode is omitted. A pastoral woodwind ensemble, starting with a clarinet solo, leads to the thematic section, and the episode makes quite frequent use of the empty fifth parallel. The second episode is lyrical, but it is itself in ternary form.

The third movement is an energetic finale that begins with Allegro con brio and shows a free rondo-like conception. The main theme is presented by the horn following the introductory rhythm. After a lyrical episode of meno mosso, Andante serioso recalls the introductory theme of the first movement, which involves a broader melody. This melody, together with the motive of the rondo theme and the motive of the theme of the first movement, builds up the climax of the conclusion, and the introductory rhythm of Allegro assai closes the whole piece.

　最初の交響曲において、ヨーロッパの伝統的な4楽章交響曲の持つ基本的な要素を単一楽章の中に綜合することを試みた團伊玖磨は、この第2作――その間に《ブルレスケ風交響曲》という存在があるが――においては、3楽章の構成を選んだ。
　しかし、それは後退を意味するものではなく、第1交響曲における理念を踏襲しながらも、より自由な構想を見せ、いわば柔軟性に富んだ書法への志向を示したものといえる。もちろん、そこにはヨーロッパ的な意識がかなり残されていることは否めないが、その中間楽章が、アンダンテ・コン・モトによって一貫しているのに対して、両端楽章が、きわめて数多くのテンポの変化を指定していることは見逃せまい。
　作曲は1955年の夏に着手され、翌年3月30日に葉山で完成された。
　初演は1956年4月5日、上田仁の指揮する東京交響楽団第77回定期演奏会においてなされた。現在の改訂版は、1988年6月5日に書きあげられたものであり、楽器編成は次の通りである。
　ピッコロ(フルート III持替え)、フルート 2、オーボエ 2、イングリッシュ・ホルン、クラリネット 2、バス・クラリネット、ファゴット 2、コントラファゴット、ホルン 6、トランペット 3、トロンボーン 3、テューバ、ティンパニ、トライアングル、タンバリン、小太鼓、シンバル、大太鼓、タムタム、弦楽合奏。
　第1楽章は、アンダンテ・セリオーソの序奏と、アレグロ・マ・ノン・タントに始まる主部とからなっているが、演奏時間が全曲のほぼ半ばを占める長大なものとなっている。序奏の冒頭で提示される動機(G♭ - C♭ - F♭ - B♭ / C♭ - B♭ - C♭)は、第1主題とも関連を見せるが、楽章全体でかなり重要な役割りを果たすとともに、そこにまた、その後の彼の創作で重要な要素となる4度の累積と2度という音程関係や逆付点のリズムがすでに示唆されていることは興味深い。主部はアレグロ・マ・ノン・タントで提示される力強い第1主題と、モデラートによる抒情的な第2主題を中心とするソナタ形式と考えられるが、この主題の対比と、それらから派生した素材の豊かさが、この楽章を変化に富んだものとしている。
　第2楽章はアンダンテ・コン・モトのロンド形式の応用と見られるもので、第2エピソードの後の主題部は省略されているが、ほぼシンメトリックな構想を見せている。クラリネットのソロに始まる牧歌的な木管群のアンサンブルが、主題部を導き出すが、エピソードでは空虚5度の平行がかなり頻用されている。また第2エピソードは抒情的であるが、それ自体が3部形式になっている。
　第3楽章はアレグロ・コン・ブリオに始まるエネルギッシュな終曲で、自由なロンド風の構想を見せる。主題は、導入のリズムにつづいて、ホルンによって提示される。メノ・モッソの抒情的なエピソードの後では、アンダンテ・セリオーソによって第1楽章の序奏の主題が回想され、それには、さらに幅広い旋律が関わって行く。この旋律は、ロンド主題の動機や第1楽章の主題動機などとともに、結尾のクライマックスを築きあげて行き、アレグロ・アッサイの導入のリズムが全曲を閉じる。
