Panzer 87/140: Bigger Claws for the Leopard

What’s the best Leopard 2A4 ever made?

That one’s a bit tough to answer but the Swiss upgrade variant has got to be one of the top candidates. Codenamed Panzer 87/140 or Pz 87-140, this prototype mounted a domestically produced 140 mm gun and new turret armor on the Leopard 2A4.

Now that the Panzer 87/140 is coming to MWT: Tank Battles in the next Battle Pass, it’s time to give this beast a proper intro.


The 140 mm gun is built on pure tradeoffs — sacrificing tempo for shock value. Firing massive shells every 6.8 seconds, the Panzer 87-140 is all about shooting first and hopefully last.

As a result, the Swiss Panzer only gets two shells (likely because that’s all you’ll need!), both available at Mk 1 and thus easy to max out.

Pz Kan Pfeil Pat APFSDS — The mouthful of abbreviations roughly translates to “Tank gun arrow cartridge”, which is Swiss for 1,000 mm armor penetration with 14,520 base damage and 3,630 module damage.
Pz Kan HL Pat MZ HEATFS — This alternative option grants 100 extra mm of armor penetration (1,100 total) and adds explosion damage, though it’s susceptible to reactive armor and should be used with caution.

Mounting a 140 mm cannon is only half the battle — the rest comes down to keeping it on the tank. To handle the calibre and keep it safe and firing, the Panzer 87-140 gets a reinforced turret that adds serious bulk: going up from some 55-56 tons to a whopping 61.

All that bulk didn’t take away the legacy traits of the Leopard, and the Swiss Panzer keeps its legendary protection and speed, reaching up to 70 km/h.
