It's a new day, and today, we have a monster 18-inch laptop to repair. Well, it turns on, but it doesn't display an image on the screen. When I run a display test, I can faintly see the screen flashing through the test colors. This points to a bad backlight, but what's the cause? I'll need to grab a test screen and see if we can get this screen to show a picture. And no, replacing the LCD did not fix the issue. So, the problem is with the motherboard. Under the microscope, I first check the LCD connector for damage. Then, I measure to see if it is getting the 19V we need to power the backlight. Well, the 19 volts at the LCD connector are missing, and I have traced it back to a fuse here. Not knowing why this fuse blew, I replace it and hope for the best. While I am reassembling the laptop, I call the customer, and the cause of the blown fuse is revealed. Never unplug a laptop LCD screen with the battery still connected.
