It's a new day, and today, we have a monster 18-inch laptop to repair. Well, it turns on, but it doesn't display an image on the screen. When I run a display test, I can faintly see the screen flashing through the test colors. This points to a bad backlight, but what's the cause? I'll need to grab a test screen and see if we can get this screen to show a picture. And no, replacing the LCD did not fix the issue. So, the problem is with the motherboard. Let's get this motherboard removed and see if we can find the issue.
Under the microscope, I first check the LCD connector for damage. Then, I measure to see if it is getting the 19V we need to power the backlight. Well, the 19 volts at the LCD connector are missing, and I have traced it back to a fuse here. Not knowing why this fuse blew, I replace it and hope for the best. While I am reassembling the laptop, I call the customer, and the cause of the blown fuse is revealed. Never unplug a laptop LCD screen with the battery still connected.
