The breathtaking view of Train over sea on the dangerous New Pamban Bridge of Rameswaram Island. The location is also a cyclone-prone high wind velocity zone.
This time the video was shot from Sony RX10 Mark iv and Go Pro Hero 9 along with Zoom H1N for Audio.
A 108 Years Old Pamban Bridge truly is a marvel of Engineering and innovation (which is going to get demolished soon 😢). I was lucky enough to explore and observe the beauty of India's first ever sea bridge a whole day from Sunrise to Sunset.
While, the rise of New Pamban Bridge is being re-constructed in the year 2022: https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePa...
Enjoy watching the three trains on New Pamban Bridge with only 2 EMD based locomotive classes i.e., WDP 4B and WDP 4D of SR's PONMALAI [GOC] Diesel Loco Shed with the Passenger/Express trains, carefully crossing over the 2.3 Km long cantilever bridge at a restricted permanent speed of 50 kmph on New bridge.
The Pamban Bridge :
----------------------------
The Pamban Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge on the Palk Strait which connects the town of Mandapam in mainland India with Pamban Island and Rameswaram of Tamil Nadu.
Opened in Feb 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India till 2010. The rail bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships pass through. On 24 February 2014, the Pamban Bridge marked its 100th anniversary.
The Rameswaram bridge aka Pamban bridge is 6,776 ft (2,065 m) long and was opened for traffic in 1914. The railroad bridge is a still-functioning double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge. About 10 ships such as cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers pass through the bridge once in every month. In December 2018, the bascule of this bridge was damaged, which suspended transportation on the bridge for 3 months. Rail movement was again restored on 27 February 2019.
After completion of Pamban bridge, meter gauge lines were laid from Mandapam up to Pamban Station, from here the railway lines bifurcated into two directions one towards Rameswaram about 6.25 miles (10.06 km) up and another branch line of 15 miles (24 km) terminating at Dhanushkodi. The section was opened to traffic in 1914. The train ran up to Dhanushkodi until 1964 when the meter-gauge branch line from Pamban to Dhanushkodi was destroyed during the 1964 Dhanushkodi cyclone.
The Indian Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced that a new railway bridge will be constructed near the old Pamban Bridge at a cost of ₹ 250 crores. This new double electric line bridge is planned to be constructed in automotive mode, allowing two ships to pass this bridge at the same time.
The bridge consist of 143 piers and has a double leaf bascule section with a Scherzer rolling type lift span. It's 220 ft (67 m) long and each of 100 tonnes.
Pamban Bridge accident 1964 :
-------------------------------------------
The 1964 Rameshwaram cyclone (also known as the Dhanushkodi cyclone) was regarded as one of the most powerful storms to ever strike Sri Lanka (known then as Ceylon) on record. Early on December 23, the storm struck Ceylon near Pamban Island with winds estimated at 240 kmph (150 mph), ranking it as a modern-day super cyclonic storm.
At least 1,800 people lost their lives as a result of the cyclone.
On December 23, an estimated 7.6 m (25 ft) storm surge struck the town of Dhanuskodi on the south eastern edge of the island, submerging the town and overturning the Pamban - Dhanuskodi passenger train killing all 150 passengers on board. The town, an important transit point between India and Ceylon, was completely destroyed and has not been rebuilt since.
The national award winning Tamil movie "Kannathil Muthamittal" (2002) was filmed at the Pamban Bridge
and
the parts of the Bollywood Hindi movie "Chennai Express" (2013) were filmed at the Pamban Bridge
The DAY - 2 till DAY - 6 will follow in the next set of videos including the Final Diesel Runs and First Electric Runs of some trains.
