I have removed comments due to the vile angry vitriol this video has generated.
I made this animation as a favour for my elderly father.
He had an idea, I visualised it, hoping to get a positive constructive conversation going...
I am not an energy company (obviously) and I don't want to subject my poor old father to the poisonous and unhelpful spite of a bunch of cowardly trolls. I hope you feel good for the harm you have done...
AN IDEA FOR USING SAND TO STORE HEAT AND SUBSEQUENTLY TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY
A discussion of using sand as a “Battery”
This concept is based on the Masdar research which uses parabolic mirrors to focus light on a small area to heat sand, that falls through a cylinder. It then uses that heat as a store for future production of power. See article on later page
Sand can easily flow as in an hour glass. Sand can be very easily heated requiring only one fifth of the energy to heat compared to water. This heat is also given up easily.
I envisage cold sand coming from a reservoir, lifted to a heat exchange tower, and percolating through electrically heated furnaces and down refractory channels, absorbing heat sufficient to reach 600C -1000C. Heat control is achieved by regulating sand flow.
This is then stored until required.
When needed, this heated sand is then elevated to a heat exchange tower where it again slides down channels surrounded by water pipes. The cold water comes in the bottom of the tower into those pipes and is heated by the sand, reaching about 600C by the time it is discharged at the top. When compressed it is in a supercritical state, ideal for generators. Heat control is achieved by regulating water flow. At the turbines, the ideal temperature is 550C.
The sand depleted of heat is returned to the cold reservoir.
Regulating sand, electricity and water supply will establish control.
This system required very few moving parts, no mechanical or electrical systems that need to be invented and should cost considerably less than batteries or hydro power.
Large scale plants such as the solar panels planned for Pacific Sands at Ningi in Queensland would be ideal as a pilot plant .
They will have the means to produce large quantities of electricity store it in safe areas and convert it to AC current whenever needed
Electricity can be generated until the hot sand is exhausted.
It can be a very large unit capable of storing 1 Gigawatt of energy produced over 24 hours, or a series of smaller units. This is contained in an area 100 metres square.
Whatever is generated can be stored for extended periods with little loss.
Sand is natural, inexpensive and nonpolluting.
Sand is an excellent insulator so the reservoir stays hot with little extraneous insulation.
The hot sand is stored sufficiently deep in the ground for safety.
