I Am Muslim, Ramayan Is Hindu — But Art Is Bigger Than Religion,” Says AR Rahman
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has finally spoken about working on filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari’s epic film Ramayan and responding to trolls who questioned him because of his religion.
Rahman, who is Muslim, said clearly that art, knowledge, and values should never be limited by religion. He explained that he grew up learning about Indian epics like the Ramayan and Mahabharat from childhood, even though he follows Islam.
In a recent interview with BBC Asian Network, Rahman said that he studied in a Brahmin school, where every year students performed stories from the Ramayan and Mahabharat. Because of that, he already understands the culture and meaning behind these stories.
“Values Matter More Than Identity”
Talking about the controversy, Rahman said the real essence of the Ramayan is not religion, but good character, truth, and high morals.
He said,
“The story is about how good and noble a person is. People can debate, but I value all the good things anyone can learn, no matter where they come from.”
He also added that wisdom should be accepted without worrying about its source.
“Hans Zimmer Is Jewish, I Am Muslim, Ramayan Is Hindu”
Rahman replied strongly to those who questioned his involvement. He said society needs to rise above narrow thinking.
“We must move beyond selfishness and small-mindedness. When we rise above it, we shine. Hans Zimmer is Jewish, I am Muslim, and Ramayan is Hindu. This is coming from India to the whole world with love.”
In simple words, Rahman explained that music and devotion are about emotion and respect, not about which religion you belong to.
About the Film Ramayan
The big-budget film Ramayan, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, is being made on a massive scale.
Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram
Sai Pallavi as Sita
Yash as Ravana
Sunny Deol as Hanuman
The film will release in two parts — Diwali 2026 and Diwali 2027, with a budget of over ₹4000 crore.
Rahman says being Muslim does NOT come in the way of making Ramayan music.
For him, devotion is about values, goodness, and emotion — not religion.
