Everything seemed under control until the spring of 1982, when his recruited informants started disappearing or turning up dead—brutally executed, yet with no evidence left behind.

Initially, investigators suspected Leonard himself was eliminating his own informants to cover his tracks. But the shocking truth was far darker: his driver and protégé, Frankie Caruso, had been secretly dosed with microdoses of fentanyl and scopolamine under a twisted Mafia protocol called the “Double Bind Protocol”, inducing paranoia and hallucinations. In his drug-induced state, Caruso killed the secondary informants and eventually Leonard himself, paralyzing and burying him alive by the Des Plaines River.

Caruso was arrested but the case was quickly suppressed by the federal government to avoid exposing Mafia tactics or weakening witness protection programs. Joey Lombardo, the mastermind, was never touched, and Leonard’s family received minimal compensation under strict silence orders.
