Joy Faith Nyambura was born and raised in Kibagare. She completed her primary and secondary education, though her mother faced many struggles supporting her. While Joy was still in primary school, her mother ran a small shop. Neighbors spread false rumors that she was selling drugs, even though it was untrue. Their house was demolished three times, but nothing was ever found.

Joy herself was arrested on her way to school, accused of carrying bhang. She had to spend the night at a police station until her mother came to bail her out. Each time her mother tried to open a shop, the police would harass them.

One day, Joy and her mother went to a club to look for work. It was Joy’s first time inside a club. They got jobs, but the manager demanded that they allow customers to touch them inappropriately in order to encourage alcohol sales. After a bad encounter with a customer, Joy defended herself, and the manager fired her.

She later found another job in a different club, but there she became addicted to alcohol and drugs. One day, she injected herself with drugs and blacked out. Her mother was called, and Joy was rushed to the hospital. After recovering, she met a boyfriend who was a thug. She helped him find customers in the club, and he introduced her to spiking drinks so they could steal from patrons. This became a habit.

Eventually, her boyfriend was beaten by a mob, and Joy had to flee to save herself. Later, she met another thug whose scheme was to target women in clubs. He would go home with them, drug them, and steal everything valuable from their houses.

One day, Joy met a white man who promised her 50,000 shillings if she went home with him. He took Viagra, and Joy endured everything he did to her. Afterwards, he gave her an extra 20,000 shillings. Tempted by the money, Joy kept returning to him whenever she needed cash, sleeping with him in exchange for payment. On one occasion, he invited a friend over and tried to drug her drink. But Joy was clever—she swapped the drinks, and both men blacked out. She stole from them and escaped.
