What’s Direct Anterior Approach (DAA)? How its different from other approaches of hip surgery?

DAA is a minimally invasive technique where the surgeon accesses the hip joint from the front of the thigh, ideal for conditions like AVN. Unlike traditional approaches, DAA aims for *no muscle cutting*, instead gently splitting two muscles to reach the hip capsule. This means potentially less post-operative pain and faster recovery.

In contrast, the MIS posterior approach involves cutting muscles, which are then stitched and repaired. While effective, this can lead to longer recovery times. Even with DAA, a small muscle cut might be necessary during femur or stem insertion.

During surgery, a C-arm (X-ray) is used to ensure precise component placement in DAA. In the MIS posterior approach, the Transverse Acetabular Ligament (TAL) is used for cup alignment and leg length assessment. While posterior approaches excel at leg length assessment, DAA relies on visual assessment or advanced robotic/navigation systems to achieve the same goal.
