Hey, it’s Matt with Midwest Guns and Gear, and today we’re taking a look at one of the most overlooked revolvers in Colt’s history — the Colt Double Action models from 1892 through 1901.
These old warhorses were issued to U.S. troops during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine–American War, chambered in .38 Long Colt.
While beautifully made, they earned a rough reputation for being underpowered in combat, eventually leading to the adoption of the .45 ACP and the legendary 1911 pistol.
In this video, we’ll:
🔹 Compare the 1898 civilian and 1901 U.S. Army models
🔹 Talk about the history and design of the Colt Double Action series
🔹 Discuss why these guns were replaced — and how they still shoot today
🔹 Head out to the range for a few rounds with some rare .38 Short Colt ammo
Whether you’re a Colt collector, military history buff, or just love old-school revolvers, this one’s worth watching.
