Background to Story: Corsica. To the schoolboy it's the
birthplace of Napoleon. To the tourist it's a sun-soaked
island in the Mediterranean. To the government in Paris
it's always been a part of metropolitan France. But some
islanders have demanded independence, sometimes with
violence. Paris has responded with a form of regional
control and on August 8th, Corsicans will be voting for
their first-ever regional assembly. This report gives all
the background.
