After the Great War, most European nations began to exchange their lengthy and cumbersome long rifles for more handier carbine-length firearms, signifying an evolution in small arms development. The long pike-like rifle and bayonet was discarded in favor of more utilitarian armaments, that is for almost every nation across Europe except the Soviet Union. The M91/30 Mosin reigned supreme and would continue to be the primary arm for the Soviets as they entered World War II. The M91/30, comparatively speaking, is pretty obsolete to the other European arms of the time by not just mechanical and cartridge standards, but also due partly to its length. Despite having a carbine-length Mosin rifle, the M38 Carbine, the Soviets primarily used the longer M91/30. However, despite that, the M38 saw efficient use and implementation and was certainly one of the better Soviet small arms of the war. The M38 would pave the path for the introduction of other carbine-length arms such as the M44, the SKS45, and the AK47.
