A laparotomy is a surgical procedure in which a doctor makes a large incision in the abdominal wall to access the abdominal cavity.
🔹 Purpose:
To diagnose the cause of abdominal pain or internal bleeding (exploratory laparotomy).
To treat conditions like trauma injuries, tumors, bowel obstruction, perforated ulcers, appendicitis, gynecological problems, etc.
🔹 Procedure:
1. Patient is given general anesthesia.
2. A long incision is made in the abdomen (commonly midline).
3. The surgeon examines the organs (stomach, liver, intestines, pancreas, spleen, etc.).
4. Depending on the findings, treatment (removing tumor, repairing injury, draining pus, stopping bleeding, etc.) is done.
5. The incision is then closed with sutures or staples.
🔹 Risks:
Infection
Bleeding
Injury to internal organs
Adhesions (scar tissue formation)
Hernia at incision site
🔹 Recovery:
Hospital stay: few days to weeks (depending on reason for surgery).
Pain management and antibiotics may be given.
Full recovery may take 6–8 weeks.
