Wind-Swept Sands | 1894 | William Merritt Chase
Between 1891 and 1902, William Merritt Chase created many landscape paintings of the area around the Shinnecock Summer Art School on Long Island, New York, where he served as a prominent instructor. In Wind-Swept Sands, he captured the dunes and plant life with brisk brushstrokes, applied thin washes to render the sky, and used a muted gray palette to suggest an overcast atmosphere. His teaching approach was heavily influenced by French Impressionism, emphasising outdoor painting to make use of natural light and shifting weather conditions.
