Do Gender Roles Really Change? Mary Kom Controversy Explained

In this video, I break down the recent controversy surrounding boxing legend Mary Kom’s appearance on Aap Ki Adalat with Rajat Sharma, where serious allegations were made against her ex-husband. From claims of financial dependency and lack of career to accusations of infidelity, the narrative presented on national television sharply contradicts Mary Kom’s own earlier public statements, where she praised her husband for sacrificing his career, supporting her journey, and taking care of their children.
On the other hand, her ex-husband has publicly denied these allegations and counter-claimed that Mary Kom was allegedly involved in multiple affairs, which he chose to ignore for the sake of the family. These are claims and counter-claims, but what raises serious questions is whether such deeply personal disputes should be aired in a one-sided manner on a prime-time platform.
I also connect this controversy to the 2014 biopic “Mary Kom” starring Priyanka Chopra, which promoted the idea of breaking traditional gender roles, portraying a strong, self-independent woman supported by a house-husband figure. For years, this couple was cited as an example of progressive values. However, today’s statements seem to undermine the very ideology that was once celebrated.
This video questions selective equality, ideological inconsistency, and the gap between feminist narratives and real-world accountability. Why is financial dependence acceptable in one direction but shamed in another? Why are definitions enforced selectively? And why are men expected to follow standards that self-proclaimed vocal feminists themselves do not?
