From Temple to the Synagogue: Absence and Presence begins in Jerusalem, at the cross-roads of Asia, Africa and Europe, the birthplace of the first monotheistic religion, Judaism.

From Jerusalem the film travels to the synagogues on the island of Djerba in Tunisia, where places worship echo the architectural plans of a mosque.

On the Iberian Peninsula, the Inquisition managed to destroy nearly every synagogue, the survivors found in Cordoba and Toledo, are exceptional.

In Amsterdam during the Golden Age. Here the Portuguese Synagogue proudly stands in the cityscape and attests to a confident Jewish population.

The five synagogues of the Venice Ghetto, have modest exterior facades which reveal nothing of the lavish and sumptuous interiors.

The large synagogue of Budapest, the Dohany, represents a rare example of those Jewish sacred places which survived the second World War.

The Jews find refuge in the New World. There a building emerges, Beth Sholom Synagogue, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright reflects their newly found confidence and pride.
